Members
The Historic Architectural Review Board consists of seven members who are appointed by the City Commission and serve staggered terms. Board members must be residents of the City and shall not serve at the same time on any other City board. Whenever possible Board members shall be chosen from one or more of the following organizations, professions, or groups: architecture, civil or structural engineering, local historical society, and a resident of one of the historic districts in the City of Bartow or an owner of a historic commercial property.
General Functions
The City of Bartow has declared as a matter of public policy that the protection, enhancement, and perpetuation of properties of historical, cultural, archeological, aesthetic, and architectural merit are in the interest of the health, prosperity, and welfare of the people of the City of Bartow. Through the implementation of Historic Architectural Preservation Regulations, the City intends to:
- Effect and accomplish the protection, enhancement, and perpetuation of buildings, structures, improvements, and landscape features that represent distinctive elements of the City's cultural, social, economic, political, scientific, religious, and architectural history
- Safeguard the City's historical, cultural, and architectural heritage, as embodied and reflected in such individual sites and districts
- Foster civic pride in the accomplishments of the past
- Protect and enhance the City's attraction to visitors and the support and stimulus to the economy there provided
- Promote the use of individual sites and districts for the education, pleasure, and welfare of the people of the City of Bartow
The Board is responsible for identifying and maintaining Bartow's historic buildings and structures for the benefit of its residents, both now and in the future, through the development and administration of a comprehensive historic architectural preservation program. The Board shall have the authority to review and render a decision on all proposed alterations, demolitions, and relocations for contributing property, and to review new construction within the designated boundaries of historic districts.
