Divisions

Line Division

The Electric Line Division builds and maintains 259 miles of overhead electric lines and 77 miles of underground electric lines. Bartow Electric Service territory covers approximately 115 square miles. They are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to fix any problems that occur. From resetting broken poles, fixing a downed wire, or restoring the power to your home or business, the line division does a tough and dangerous job in any weather, day or night.

Substation Division

Bartow is connected to the Florida transmission grid at six electric distribution substations in and around the City of Bartow. Duke Energy provides the transmission lines to Bartow’s substations. Substation Division maintains the equipment inside the substations and regularly tests and maintains the transformers, circuit breakers, and protective relaying to make sure we have a reliable power. All the substations are monitored using a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition or SCADA system. This allows us to operate the electric system from a central office and to troubleshoot and repair problems faster.

Danger! Substations are fed with 69,000 Volts from the transmission lines. The transformers step this voltage down to 7,200 Volts for distribution around the city. Keep out for your own safety!

Report suspicious activity to the Police by calling 534-5034.

Metering Division

Electric Metering installs and maintains over 12,700 electric meters so that power is accurately measured and billed to our customers. New meters are installed as new customers are added, meters that are damaged or malfunctioning are retired. Meter testing facilities are maintained at the Electric Department and tracking of meters and tests are carefully recorded.

Testing has shown that the vast majority of meters are still extremely accurate, even after many years of service. High electric bills are rarely the result of a bad meter.

Tampering with an electric meter is extremely dangerous and can get you electrocuted. It is also illegal. No good ever comes of it! Try conservation instead.

Engineering Division

The engineering for the electric system is a diverse and complex task. The engineering division's duties include the design of new facilities to bring power to your home or business, project management, permitting, system planning, and setting standards for construction. Engineering is always looking at ways to increase the reliability of our system and was recently recognized by the Florida Municipal Electric Association for decreasing our average outage times by over 25%.
